Default SHIFTING QUESTION??? HELP!!

I JUST BOUGHT A 1993 900RR. THE THING RUNS GREAT BUT THERE IS ONE PROBLEM. WHEN TRYING TO DOWN SHIFT INTO 1ST GEAR IT WILL NOT GO. ALL THE OTHER SHIFTING PATTERNS ARE FINE BUT JUST TRYING TO GET INTO THE 1ST GEAR AT A LIGHT TO SAY, IT JUST WONT GO AND STAYS IN 2ND GEAR. I JUST CHANGED THE OIL AND IT DID HELP A LITTLE BUT STILL NOT RIGHT(HAVE TO BEAT THE S#!T OUT OF IT TO GET IT TO GO). ANY INFO ON WHAT TO CHECK OR CHANGE WOULD BE GREAT!!!! THX IN ADVANCE...

you should be downshifting into first gear before you stop completely. this is called engine breaking. whenever you downshift while you are slowing down, this will aid in making the bike come to a stop faster. its also a good way to make your brakes' last a long time. But if you do have to stop fast or an emergency, just when you want to get into first gear, push the bike forward a little while clicking down into first gear. Hope this helps

check your cable adjustment.
if your clutch is bad, it's more like you're in gear but the bike just won't go, feels as if it's slipping.

I think it is because your "caps lock" is stuck in the "on" position.[8D]

Do you clutch with 1, 2, or all fingers? I notice mine is a touch harder to get into first when using my standard "two finger" technique. Simply because the clutch plates aren't fully disengaged. If you are pulling the clutch lever to the bar, then I would also suggest checking the clutch cable adjustment.

The first thing I would do is adjust the clutch lever at the pivot wheel so it is the furtherest away from the handlebar. At the closest position, it may not release the clutch enough. Then I would do like the others say and check the cable adjustment. Then I would check for crash damage or a loose shifter. When I take the shifter off my 1000F, it has a little mark that has to be indexed for reinstallation on the splines. Does your's have that?
