Sealant on O rings?
Hello all,
Successfully extracted the O ring for my VSS from the crankcase and found that whoever touched it before me had installed the O ring with what looks like black sealant, which is partly what made it so hard to get out.
Why would they have put sealant on it? Is there ever a reason to use sealant with o-rings? The service manual says nothing about it. Am I supposed to use sealant on that area?
Also is it ok for me to go buy a matching size o-ring from my local auto shop or should I stick with Honda OEM?
Thanks in advance

You shouldn't need to put sealant on NEW o rings. The PO probably put it on there to help seal it without replacing it. There isn't anything special about it that it would need to come from the dealer.
+1 for Demon was probably not replaced last time
If you get stuck you can always pick up the correct diameter O ring strip, cut to length and glue with an appropriate adhesive.
That said some of the OEM O rings are very cheap so why not if that is the case.

Glad it worked out SunBlue,
O Ring Cord is available in multiple diameters and cab be a life saver if you have an obscure O ring that you are struggling to get hold of, as well as Gasket Paper that comes in sheets where you can cut to fit and make your own using the old one if practicable for a template.
Cheers
