quick question about oil
I got some Mobil1 10-40, got home and realized it was high mileage....should I take it back or will it be ok? whats the diff between high mileage and the reg syntheic?
nah it doesnt say that...I researched on the forum and found that, doesnt say anthing about energy conserving. I tried it...rode about 50 miles It actually seems to shift better...
High mileage has a bunch of additives that help seals and gaskets expand and become more pliable. I would not have used this in my bike at all. Hope you just got lucky and don't wind up doing a clutch next week.
I'm on my second oil change using that exact oil (mobil 1 full synthetic 10-40). Before I did it I was in the same boat...wondering if this was good for the bike....then I figured 1. It's mobil 1 full synthetic motor oil the quailty is good 2. There is down side of keeping the seals in good shape?... (See #1) mobil wouldn't put anything in there that would compromise the engine. 3. As for the clutch it behaves no differently than it did with whatever was in the bike when I bought it...beyond that it's a wear item and will need to be replaced eventually anyway.
That's my .02. I've ridden 5000miles on it with no problems and I have friends running similar stuff with no problems for even longer mileages. Thus I have no intention to change.

If it matters... and I can always do some research to find where it was that I read this... but I've always been told that once you go to synthetic, you shouldn't ever go back to a conventional oil. Not sure if the high mileage was non-syn or what... but figured it was worth noting.
Seals and gaskets are all the same and I have been working on cars for years and have been to over 20 classes for MANY different oil TYPES(most oil is made by a few manufacturers) and they ALL say it is ok to switch from one oil type to another(full syn, semi-syn.). With that said, mike said it right high mileage has additives to help swell seals and gaskets which helps stop some oil leaks. They do not recommend stopping the use of high mileage oil due to its benefits. To put it short if you want your ride to last and perform at its best longer use a well known proper weight oil and keep it that way, if you buy a bike and can find out what was used keep using it, if not and it has over 50k for a bike or 80k for a car use high mileage. ALL say using synthetic on an old engine could help "clean" the engine and cause oil pump problems.
