Quick Manual CCT Question

Quick Manual CCT Question
So I just finished up my manual CCT. I have a quick question:
The instructions that some blogger put on CBRForum were very good, but he said to hand tighten the main bolt until it is tight then back it out a bit. I did this and when I started the bike it sounded like World War II. So I tightened it with a wrench a bit further and the noise went away. I reved it up a bit and it seemed to sound fine. But the problem is I dont really know what "fine" exactly is since I am so used to the CCT clatter.
SOOOO my question is: how far should you tighten the bolt?? Should you just play it by ear??? If it is too tight can it cause any real problems with timing or anything??? And if it is too lose will it cause any problems that I need to know???
any help would be great.

no need to start another thead!

this is the deal...if the cctl is too tight, it'll wear out you cam chainguides, which will melt and get plastic shavings all over the inside of your motor, plugging it up, starving the bike of oil.
too loose and the cam chain slaps around and it could jump timing, more fubar.
i told you what you need to do already in the other thread...
you are correct, you adjust it by ear...
tighten until noise just goes away, reverse it out and do it again to make sure it goes away at the same point. then tighten it just 1/4 turn more and lock down the lock nut.
