Please Help: Fuel pump installation
I just got a new (used) tank for my F4i and before installing it decided to put the pump from my old tank onto the new one since I knew it worked. When I put gas in it was leaking from between the pump and the tank. I read the service manual afterwards and saw that you should replace the rubber gasket when doing this, so I guess I'll try it with a new one sometime tomorrow. Other than that are there any tips for installation, or do you think it was just the used gasket causing the leak. The way the manual describes the installation is to place the gasket on the tank and then slide the pump into the tank. The only problem is the steel mesh stuff tends to bunch up as you slide the pump in. If you have any experience with fuel pumps please give me any tips. Thanks.
hey mang...it's fairly straight forward.
slide the pump through the gasket first and then put the whole assembly on the tank. otherwise all that fuzz will be sticking out here and there.
i think the gasket was the main problem because it's supposed to create a one time seal with the tank. the side of the gasket that attaches to the tank seems to have some sticky material there that helps the seal.
you should replace the crush washers on the fuel lines you've removed...

Thanks for the response, now I just have to wait for the dealership to get one in on order. You would think a gasket might be a normally stocked item, at least at one of ten dealerships.
