Default Output shaft

Hi all out there been running my cbr1000f '89 for a few weeks since getting back on the road when suddenly lost all drive. i suspected a clutch fault but i noticed the gears were still engageing and would notdo so without pulling the clutch in. Removed front sprocket cover and to my horror saw the output shaft on from the box turning inside the sprocket.
When i bought the bike the chain and rear sprocket looked new and so they were and was told the front was new as well. But when i removed the sprocket the shaft has completely stripped, now do i replace the shaft and at what cost or do i find replacement engine/box unit.
I suspect the previous owner knew of the problem and fitted new sprockets onto an already knackered shaft[:@]
Any ideas guys?[]
