Default Oil Level

This might have been covered before, if so i do apologize, but i did a quick check for oil level and didn't quite get a result.

So, i'm interested on how you guys check your oil level after doing an oil change. I always follow the manual, letting the bike idle for 3-5min, turning it off, waiting another 3-5 mins, level the bike, then check the glass.

Last Saturday my buddy was there watching me, and he insisted that on all he's bikes, he checks it while it running. i remember doing something like that on my 2nd or 3rd oil change and after it fully settled the sight glass was full, so i ended up siphoning some oil off.

So how do you guys check yours?

let it idle for 3-5 minutes, turn it off and check it with the bike level. that's it... NOT RUNNING.

That's how I do it too, and my sight glass also becomes completely covered once the oil settles.

If you're adjusting the oil level AFTER it's been allowed to settle, then you're no longer performing the procedure properly.

The sight window is in the crank case, if the engine is running and oil is being circulated throughout the engine as well as been tossed all around be the clutch and filling the filter etc, there's not going to be much left in the bottom of the motor.

"Generally" the only time a running fluid level applies is mechanics that run on fluid pressure, then the level is checked to insure adequate surplus fliud is on tap to keep the system from losing pressure. Like a A/T tranny or something of the like.

In this case, engine off, bike level and time for the oil to settle into the pan and stabilize in the sight window is correct.
