Default Oil leak at generater side.

I'm working on my sons 2005 CBR600. It seems to have oil leaking out of the generator cover. The schematics don't show a gasket. I've been working on bikes and cars for years and never seen a wet generator. Is this the case with the CBR600? My fears are maybe a crank shafy seal.

Is it leaking out of the cover or are you just talking oil inside the cover? A little oil in there is normal. There is usually a gasket to keep it from leaking on the ground. Did your son lay it down on the cover?

It is leaking out of the cover filling up the bottom of the farring and then of course droops on the ground. It looks like thier is a silicone type gasket there.

That gasket is usually the light green material. If you have stands for the bike, put it on the stands and remove the cover bolts. You should get a few ounces of oil drip out when you remove the cover. Word of warning ... put soft towels all around because the covers can sometimes be a pain to get off. The magnet pulls like crazy until that last 1/2 inch when it allows you to fling the cover across the garage floor ... hence the soft towels.

So if you get to that point and you're not getting a steady stream of oil then get a new gasket and zip her up. My experience has been that unless it was laid down hard on that side I doubt the seals are shot and it's probably just the gasket (or someone's attempt at a gasket) that is leaking.

Well thanks for your help Chainstretcher. I think you've cleared up the mistery and set me on the right path.
