oil filters
Someone once told me that there was a fram oil filter that would take the place of the expensive honda one. Does anyone know if that is true. I can't remember who told me. I have a 2005 600RR and the book doesn't say what honda filter to use. Also in the book it says you have to take the coolant tank off to get the oil filter off. Does anyone know if that is true?

same filter as with F4i...so look for [5]
not sure about removing the oil filter, haven't worked much on RRs...just coolant flush. what a pain your bike is!

RE: oil filters
What a coincidence - I just finished changing the oil on my 05 600RR. While I was waiting for the oil to drain I thought I'd take a couple photos.
Let me say that the actual time required for the oil change is MUCH less time than what is required to remove/replace the right-side lower and mid fairings. And yes, I hate the crappy plastic screw gimmicks too.
Here are a 2 shots of my bike with the coolant tank moved off to the side. A simple strap wrench gets the filter on and off. I think it was a 10mm socket for the bolt that holds the coolant tank to the bracket and an 8mm socket to lossen up the bracket where it's bolted to the engine block. Oh, I can't recommend the Craftsman T-handle allen wrenches highly enough.

And this is me in my Buzz Lightyear Mesh PJs with CE armor.

AND - the Part Number for the Genuine Honda Oil Filter that I used is: 15410-MCJ-003

RE: oil filters
Fram sucks major donkey *****. build quality is apocalyptic... Honda makes a pretty decent filter, but Pureolator and Bosch make superior filters. better build, better materials, more filtration area, etc etc...
avoid fram at all costs. they show the world how NOT to make oil filters!

RE: oil filters
the frams use cardboard filters that have been known to fall apart and spread through the oil and of course the engine (little bits of paper all in your engine isn't good)
fwiw i use K&N on my F4i and have no complaints
and btw that kinda stuff you can ask any parts department at a dealership and they'll be able to look up the part number, those kinda answers are just a phone call away

RE: oil filters
I just stick with the Honda filter, I don't trust Fram.
As for taking off the coolant tank, you only have to remove the bottom bolt and shift it to the side. I did my change and didn't even need to remove the side fairing, just the bottom one. Wasn't difficult at all if you have the right tools.
