Mine gets changed every 3,000 miles - oil and filter. The maintenance schedule says every 8,000 miles but I feel that's WAY too long. Using conventional Honda GN4 oil.

Have more faith. Oil has come a long way and if you don't chuck cheap crap in it you'll get your moneys worth without destroying your engine. Technology and millions of dollars of research will only keep making it better.
You make a good point and to elaborate a little more. A quality oil AND filter is important. The filter needs to be able to flow and filter the oil for the duration, some cheaper filters may not filter the smaller particles, may plug and bypass the filter, and/or begin to break down over an extended interval.

Driving conditions are also important. Cars and bikes that are subjected to primarily short trips where the engine doesn't fully warm up or do heavy in traffic commutes should be changed more frequently then those doing longer continuous trips. Your climate affects your oil weight range choice..... It's more than just the number of miles, like so many other things this is not a "one size fits all" situation.

I've had alot of luck with Rotella T6 and Rotella T in both my bikes. Its actually recommended as one of the best oils to use for a bike, long lasting, extreme temp resistance, and cheap. Check this out, it has a lot of info on oil and filters.

Thanks for the link. It looks like I'll be staying with the Honda OEM. Good things about it in the evaluation.

Seriously, every engine I've ever built get the filter cut open immediately following the initial run and then again at the first inspection oil change. Not only do you learn alot about your 'new' engine but you learn alot about filters.
