Went ridin today, left in a hurry so i skipped my usual pre-ride inspection. Well, about 2 hours into the ride, we stopped to take a break. Got to lookin at my bike, and realized that my master link retainer clip was G-O-N-E!!!!!! And i had been doin wheelies and hangin knees without one for who knows how long.

Not a huge deal now as i'll get one tmr, but scared the crap outta me!!! lol

what is it and whats its function. i was thinkin something about the chain..i havnt done sprockets or chain yet..so yeah dont flame

 

Yes, it's part of the chain. It's like a circlip (sp?) and sits in a notch in the masterlink so that the masterlink can't come apart. These days the link is notched in as well so the circlip is just and extra safety.

It's normally going to be ok if it's missing but you should always fit one as soon as is practical. Same as using a puncture repair kit to get you to the next tyre shop.

 

you shouldn't have a split link in your chain if your riding a superbike !!! your asking for serious problems EVEN DEATH!!!
your link should be riveted

 

Well i've been runnin a split link since i've owned this bike (14,500 miles on this one) and i've never had a problem, so i think i'll be ok. Got a new clip today, no biggie.

Take the advice or leave it, It's your bike, your life, & your legs it'll rip apart when it does come off....

 

I havent ever heard anything bad about using mast link chains before. Tons of people use them on this website. They wouldnt sell them specifically for our bikes if it wasnt safe.

If it wasnt safe
People would be sueing the company way to much and they would go out of business.

I use both typs and have never had a problem with either. I just check my chain every so often to make sure everything is ok.

 

obviously not as saftey concious in the US as we are in the UK.

 

OOOORRRRRR our chains work just fine either way.
