Default Newbie w/ LED tail light needs your help!

Hey folks,

I picked up a lightly used (1100 miles) 07 CBR 1000 RR about a week ago. The previous owner installed a LED tail-light with integrated turn-signal functions. My problem is that 1) I don't know the owner, and 2) I don't know the exact brand, so I can't order a wiring diagram. Apparently the previous owner wired up the light incorrectly.

Here's what's going on:
Only the left side operates properly (running light, brake light, turn signal).
The right side will ONLY display the turn signal (no running light, no brake light).

I tried to check all the wiring connections, and everything seems tight. Seeing as how I don't have a wiring diagram, I don't know where the problem lies, and I'm hoping you folks can provide some guidance. I've included some pictures to help illustrate what I'm dealing with.

This is the bike with the running lights on (note the right side isn't working):

This is the bike with the running lights on, and the right turn signal on (sorry, but in the picture the amber right side looks red . . . trust me, it's not red):

Here's an overview of the wiring under the passenger seat:

Here's a close-up:
Red, black, green go into black connector, which connects into white connector leading to green and brown w/white stripe wires
Yellow wire connects to green and orange wires under electrical tape

Two red wires, and two black wires all seem to merge under electrical tape leading to two white wires. These apparently lead to the LED license plate light:

One yellow wire connects to one green and one blue wire, which seem to lead down to the blue(?) connector under the tail. The green, red, and two yellow wires heading toward the rear of the bike go through a grommet and into the light assembly:

These are the connectors that are under the tail. If I plug either the blue or orange connector into the empty white one, the tail light assembly doesn't work at all:

Any ideas what I need to do to get my tail light working properly?

Thanks in advance!

The white plug is for the liscense plate light and the other two are for the turn singlas (I think the orange was the left turn signal)

The other connector is for the brake light.

Its not much, but it is a starting point. I will try to find some more info for you...

I think he put the left turn singnal wires into the brake light/running light plug.

I did a little research and from what I can tell, this is a Clear Alternatives light.

That means that the yellow wires should be connected to the positive turn signal wires (one connecting to one of the wires of the blue clip and the other to one of the wires to the orange clip). The yellow wire should only be connected to ONE wire from each of these clips (one is + and one is a ground) I think that is where your problem is.

In this photo, you can see the yellow wire going to the green and orange wire. If he didn't connect it carefully, it might be grounding out (the yellow wire might be touching both of the other wires). Also make sure that the yellow wire is connected to the positive wire of the turn signal.

Ok, so the turn signal wires are:

Blue & Green
Orange & Green

Since Green is common, I'll assume Green is the Ground. That means I need to wire the yellow wire to blue and orange, respectively.

So what do I do with the green wire? Just ground them out on something?

Thanks a bunch for your help!

I just checked on my bike:

The blue clip is for the right turn signal, Orange is left.

You are correct, the green wires are the ground. You don't need to worry if they are exposed, you just need to ensure that NO positive wires ae exposed or touching any negative wires. just clip the ends of the green wires and you will be fine.

I just hope the bad wiring didn't burn out the LED's.

I checked the wiring this morning, and the green ground wires are wrapped up separately under the electrical tape. So the yellow wires are connected to the positive turn signal wires correctly.

Any other ideas? Do you know which wires are for run lights and brake lights? Apparently that's what I need to find, because obviously they're wired correctly for the left side, just not the right side.

Thanks a bunch for your help.

This white plug is for your running and brake lights. They are not devided into left and right, its just a pos and neg (for running lights) and a 3rd wire for brake lights.

You can always try hooking the wires directly to the battery to see what lights up and what doesn't BUT It sounds like you might have some burnt out LED's. If that is the case, you can try to replace the burnt out leds (soldering) or buy a new tail unit.

If you are going to purchase a replacement, I would suggest going here . Very bright and 1/2 tthe price of Clear Alternatives.

I fault-traced all the wiring on my lunch break, and it is definitely wired up correctly, so either the LED's are burnt out or something is wrong with the circuit board. Being that I don't have a receipt, I can't get it covered under warranty. [:@]

I will say that I wasn't terribly impressed with the brightness of this unit. Is the motodynamic unit you suggested brighter? Regardless, I'll likely go that route.
