Hi every one.

I have a question regarding maintainance of the cbr600rr. I am nearing 600 miles and its time for the first oil change. I called my dealer and they charge 250$ for " mainatainance" . Is there any way that I can save money ??

Also, how do i get the repair manual for the bike cos some one told me that if I buy that manual I can do the maintainance myself.

any suggestion wil be appreciated.
thanks.

Here's the sight for the repair manual.(http://www.helminc.com/helm/result.a...5JTH1CRMW17SHB). However I was just there and it is currently out, but they are expecting more at the end of this month. Most of the info you need for a basic service such as oil change should be in your owners manual. I do my own service because I don't get along with the dealer here. I use k&n oil filters because there a couple of bucks cheaper then honda's and they have a nut welded on them so you don't have to have an annoying oil filter wrench, but I shop online. It's probably cheaper for you though to buy at your dealer unless your going to order dress up goodies that will subsidize shipping cost. I get mine through dennis kirk or chaparralmotorsports. Also stick with honda oil. I hope that helps, if you have any other questions just ask. I'll try to help if I can. I don't know a whole lot about the rr other than I've studied them over quite a bit cause I wanted one. I got stuck with an F4i.

thanks thebird !

One more question, I have managed to change oil myself (first time ever) but the oil filter is beyond my skills...so , If i get the oil filter changed from any place other than the dealer would it void my warranty ?

thanks again ...u saved me a few hundred bucks !

it's not usually a good idea to change the oil without doing the oil filter at the same time. you see, if you start your bike with an old oil filter(which may contain a little of the break-in oil or not be completely efficient anymore), then you'll sort of be wasting that fresh oil you put. you can probably go to walmart or something to buy a proper size oil filter wrench. if you do attempt to do the filter yourself, when you put the new one on, dab a little bit of oil on your finger and make a nice bead on the filter "ring" or "gasket". if you're really not up for that, then i can't imagine why taking it somewhere other than a dealer would void your warranty. good luck man, hope this helps

Zeekay,
A couple of pointers:

-Performing your own service does not void the warranty.

-Having another dealer perform service does not void the warranty.

-Always change the filter when you change the oil because there is still a small amout of old oil in the filter.

-Oil is oil and filters are filters. You don't have to buy Honda oils and you don't have to buy Honda OEM filters. You can run any brand of moto oil like Motul, Castrol, Valvoline, Repsol, etc. Just remember to use the factory weight. Unless you are racing, all the major manufacturers make comparable oil. There are many brands of filters and all are suitable, just buy the correct filter specific for your 600rr.

-Try to find a non moto dealer in your area to buy oil and filters. Non moto dealers are usually cheaper. A store that sells apparel, tires, helmets, etc. If not search the internet. Somebody out there is always selling it cheaper than the other guy.

-Regarding the oil filter, it should be just as easy as changing the oil. The service manuals can be bought on Ebay. It comes on a CD-Rom and works perfectly. I bought the service manual on Ebay for $8 for my 04 CBR 1000rr.

I hope all of this helps. Post again if you need more help or info.

thanks rtmotive and quicksilver. Really appreciate your input.

Rtmotive! is the oil filter wrench same as a torque rench ? I downloaded the cbr manual from a website. The problem is that it says in the manual that the oil filter has to be tightened to a certain torque value. How do i know the that I have tightened it to that specified value ? is there any guideline to follow or should I tighten it as much as i can ?

thanks for your feedback.

The oil filter wrench is just that..a oil filter wrench.
The torque wrench is the tool that you would put the proper size socket on and then set it to whatever "torque" you are supposed to set it to and then when you tighten the bolt down and it reaches the "setting" that you set it at; the wrench will make a clicking sound to alert you that the setting has been reached and you can stop...
I understand that you are trying to save money but if you are that "NEW"..I dont recommend you try servicing the bike other than basic oil changes and such. It is very easy to break some of these things and cause more of a headache and if you mess something up ( strip out the oil drain plug, cross thread something, ect) TRUST ME..I have been down that road and it is a lesson learned that you will not forget and I am sure has happened to others!! The repair and hassle will not be worth the money you would have spent just having it done.
I wish you well with your bike, but motorcycle maintance can be more critical since it is obviously more dangerous that a car to operate and if something goes wrong the outcome can be painful. ( fail to tighten the axle down and have it lose the nut and come loose....dont ask why I know this!!)
I am not trying to be negative..and good luck with your efforts, it is just that even the service manual is written for people that have basic understandings of certain tools.
Have fun and be safe

A friend of mine put it nicely when he said, Would you buy your car from amoco or shell? then don't buy your oil from Honda. I wouldn't have put to much wieght behind that statement except that he tests oil for a living. Really smart fellow. And as for the filters, I prefer the K&N simply b.c you don't have to have an oil filter wrench to get them off. They got a little nut on the top so you can just use a simple socket wrench.
