Default Mounting Aftermarket Bodywork- Screw size and Pitch???

I got some aftermarket bodywork that I'm mounting up. The front fairing has brass inserts to grab onto the screws for the headlight and air ducts, but the stock screws aren't the correct size. Besides trial and error is there a way I can find out what fits?

I have a Craftsman tap and die set I borrowed from a friend. It has a screw pitch gauge in it, but I haven't a clue how to use it, or if it can be used in this application. Anyone have any ideas? I'm trying to avoid going to Lowes and just buying a bunch of assorted screws and trying them all...

Why can't you take the front fairing into lowes with you to match the screws up with it? I do that sort of thing to Home Depot all the time.

Failing that, did you check the service manual? It has a crapload of screw information in it.
