Minor rust in tank
Hi everyone, i have a question regarding rust inside my gas tank. I’m planning on cleaning it with vinegar, and was wondering if gas tanks come coated or sealed inside, and if the vinegar will remove it and cause more rust in future. Is minor surface rust really bad for bike? Thanks, greatly appreciate the feedback
Minor rust should not be much of an issue but there is the risk of little particles becoming dislodged and moving into the fuel system to clog injectors / jets. Short term I would add a fuel filter if there is not one already in place to stop this from causing you problems - they are very cheap.
Fuel covering bare metal will not allow it to rust ( based on the principle that you need water + air + bare steel to make rust) but if you let the level drop low enough to expose bare metal then the issue can well come back
Most fuel tanks in my experience don't come with any sealant from new but rely on good quality steel to minimise corrosion.
It is common practice in older tanks to use a sealant once rust begins - it can take a lot to clear a heavily corroded tank of rust and if you get a chance I would stop the corrosion now and seal it, especially if you are planning to keep the bike for many years. Vinegar is a very cheap way to do this since the rust seems light (remember to flush it loads when finished then dry thoroughly with either compressed air / hot air or leaving somewhere warm & dry for ages) so you are onto the right idea.
A comparison on some sealants can be found here:

Good luck
