K&N air filter, rejetting, radiator cap
'99 CBR 600 F4
What do those things have in common? Well, today I installed an OEM replacement K&N air filter, and checked my plugs in the process. The insulators were white with a tinge of pink. I couldn't match them with anything in the book or online. Any ideas what the tinge of pink means on the insulator? No blistering, and not quite pearly white. The plugs are only 300 miles old.
I got the bike all put back together, and took her out for a spin to check for any indication that she's gonna need a jet kit (I have no idea whether either of the previous two owners rejetted). The last owner put a Yosh RS-3 slipon, so I was a little concerned that the filter would put her over the top, but I've read some guys post on this forum that they had the slipon and the K&N without needing the jet kit, so I figured I'd give it a shot. SO, no flat spots, rough idle or anything like that (will I know immediately if I need to re jet?). She was running smooth until I got about 3miles down the road.
At a stop light I noticed a tuft of steam or smoke flash in front of my headlight. I spent the next few minutes trying to figure out where it was coming from because it was getting more frequent. I pulled off to the side and looked down to see a trickle of coolant on the ground coming from the bike! Upon a little inspection I realized that my radiator cap was undone, and that's what had caused the problem. Ok, so here is my big question: Could my changes to the bike have caused a pressure buildup in the coolant system so that when winding the gears out, I blew the seal on the radiator cap? I know those caps are designed to release fluid after a certain pressure rating, but not blow off like that. I don't know for sure that the cap was on tight before the ride since that wasn't in my pre-ride checks. Earlier that day, I did go on a short ride with no problems though. Somebody please tell me that these are likely unrelated!
