Default Instrument cluster problems..HELP!

Hi all,

I have a bizzare problem with my 02 f4i. It occurrd after letting my bike sit for 3 months and I had to recharge the battery. My bike runs fine but I have no Clock, speedomer, tachmeter, odemeter, temp or any other senosrs. The only thing that works on my cluster is the the neutral light, FI ight, high beam light , turn signal indicators. The back lit cluster works tho. When I turn the ignition the tach and speedometer does not register. And just recenty my "kick stand kill sensor" stop working. I know the temp sensor is still good because when the bike gets hot, I can hear the fan come on. Is it the main ECM? Apparently, I've been told that there are 6 seperate ECM's on my bike. I would take it to the dealer but if any has an ideas of what is causing the problem, I might be able to save a lot of $$$. I purchased mybike brand new and it only has 2000 mi, at most, on it before this happened. It still runs great but it is irritating not knowing the time....or how fast I'm gong! Any HELP would greatly be appreciated.

I hate to ask such a simple question, but it sounds like a blown fuse. Have you checked? I can't imagine your bike having 6 ECMs. I'll check and get back to you on that.

I looked... you only have one ECM and your fuse box is under your seat. Check out the fuses.

All the fuses are good. Here is an intersting thing. With my ignition off shouldn't the clock still worked? Well it doesn't. All the fuses near the ECM checks out ok. Unless there are fuses I am not aware of that affect the cluster. The reason I mention about the ECM is because I asked the guy at the dealership how much the ECM for my bike would cost. And he asked me, "which ECM, are you talking about" He says there was six others each with its own brain and function. I thought it was wierd myself but hey...I figured he would know. He also told me that the ECM I needed cost $850. Well, my bike runs great. I just don't have speedo, tach, clock, temp, and fuel guage. Although it would be great, I don't want to spend 850 plus labor...or even 400.00 in labor. The dealers can rob you blind. Also, I mesured the fuse for the clock and it read ~10 volts with ignition off and 0 volts with ignition on. I pulled the instrument cluster out and tested all the teminals as stated in the repair manual. All were normal. Could it be the sensors or a short some where? My bike is relatively new so I really doubt it but at this point I'm at a lost. I might have to eat the loss or go with out those luxuries. Thanks for the input doncollins.

hi, I am new here and to bikes for the most part so take this for what it is worth but, on some cars that have done to me and others with low battery and a disconnected battery.....

what I did was I took the neg. and positive cables off the battery and held just the cables togeather for 30 seconds or so. this drains the capasitors and forces the cluster and ecm into a true powerup mode again. and the milage will still be correct btw

I have no clue what he is talking about with 6 ECMs... click here to download your shop manual.

I looked through it and only found one ECM. And to replace a ECM would be a simple plug and play thing. Damn I wish you were near by so I could tear into the bike with you. I hate for anyone to visit a dealership and get ripped off.

What would be nice is if you can find a gauge cluster to plug in and see if it works on yours.

The clock on my RR stays on all the time so it should show voltage when the key is off. I would think turning the key on would kill it.

I'll look through you shop manual again and see if I can come up with anything.

Thanks for all your help on this topic D. You are correct! There is only one. I have the manual too. But again I'm not a mechanic either and I assumed the mechanics at the dealership are certified or something!. Noted.

I'll try it but do I still leave the ECM and everthing else attached and will it harm any other eletrical components. Dumb question since there is no power. Thanks for your input and I'll let you know if it works.

I tried it and it didn't work but there's a thought. The capacitor? mmmm. More question arise. Shouldn't the voltage of the clock fuse be the same as the battery when the ignition is off? As noted in my prior post, I measured the voltage going through my clock fuse and it only read 10v while my battery read 12.58. Could there be a short in that particlar wire? Anything would be helpful. Not that yours wasn't 2003cbr600rr. I really appreciate the input!
