Default Hot voltage regulator ?????

Okay guys, just picked up a 93 f2 for the girlfriend, we got it home, went for a ride, and in the famous 5 hour window, dead bike. Previous owner installed a new battery one week ago. question is 5 wires coming out of the voltage regulator, 3 yellows, 1 red/white and 1 green. one of the yellow wires is getting hot when hooked up. the wiring is spliced here, which allows us to take it apart. Would this be a sign of a bad regulator, or a short in the wiring harness?

All the wires are spliced where 3 yellows come together, could they be hooked up wrong?
