Default High Coolant Temp & Malfunction Light

I just bought this bike thursday, rode it home for 30 miles and had no problem what so ever. I changed the oil in the bike friday and took it out today for about 10-15 minutes. The high coolant temp light and red malfunction light came on. The temp was about 178. Is that high? Also any ideas on why this is happening all of a sudden? I mean I just went down the road and came back. Rode atleast 35 minutes/30 miles the other day and had no problem what so ever with it. It is set to display fahrenheit.

What bike do you have? For water cooled bikes that is about normal operating temp. The fan usually comes on around 210+ on most water cooled bikes.

Something weird for sure. 178 is not high at all. My bike, (2005 1000RR), runs about 180-190 while cruising. In slow moving traffic, it will increase extremely fast to about 210-215. the fan kicks on at 218, then off once the temp gets down under 215. Expect to see temps around 220 a lot if your doing a lot of city driving in warm weather. Theres nothing to worry about unless your temp gets around 230, then its time to shut it down. But the warning light should not have come on on such a low temp.

Did you buy it from a private seller? or a dealer? I would call whoever you bought the bike from and ask if it ever happened while they owned it. It doesn't sound like anything serious, but it would be nice to know if its something that requires further investigation or not. Also ask if they recently did a coolant flush. Its possible you have some air trapped and its throwing the sensor off.

You said you changed the Oil correct?
Did you put check the level of the oil is correct?
Also you should check the radiator to see if the Coolant is up to the neck..
Maybe it's low? I'm almost sure that when you changed the oil you did something wrong.
Check all the fluids and make sure...
That temperature is not high at all on hot days I go up to 220's
