Default Headlamp not working!

Hi guys,

A friend of mine has a CBR 400 and his headlamp stopped working yesterday. He doesn't have access to the net which is why I'm asking!

He blew a 10amp fuse, which has been replaced but hasn't blown since.

The indicators work, the horn works, the sidelights work, the bulbs are fine and still the headlamp won't work.

I'll be going to his place tonight to have a look at the wiring in case anything has rattled loose.

I was going to check the bulb holder, any relays where wires might have pulled out...

Does anyone have any other suggestions for things to check?

Many thanks!

I don't know how the wires for the headlight on a CBR 400 are routed, but if it's like the wiring on the CBR600F2s then this thread may help you with your problem.

Good luck!!

Silly question, but has he replaced he bulb for the headlight?, Blown fuse usually indicates that it went south. Also the low beam will often go, leaving the high beam intact (or visa verse, two filaments involved) which can lead to a bit of confusion with regards to whats causing the problem (when it's just the bulb itself). Most of the problems I have had with bulb's blowing, is a bad earth.

He took the bike to a shop during his lunch break and they checked the bulbs, said they were fine.

I'll check them later anyways.

I'll also be checking the earth's. He did say his dipped beam was working, but not the main beam. Again, I'll have more of an idea when I actually get to look at it.

Taking a soldering iron with me just in case!

Thanks

Found the problem guys.

Turns out it originated in the switch. I'm guessing that as he was switching from full beam to dipped beam in the dark, the switch overheated and melted. It then caused a short circuit and the fuses went.

Turns out both a 10amp and a 15amp fuse blew.

After unwelding the plastic part of the switch and replacing both the fuses, the dipped beam and full beam started to work again.

Just in case anyone else comes across this problem, check to see if the spring mechanism has been welded shut by the plastic from overheating.
