Grease On Wheel Shafts

Grease On Wheel Shafts
I just got some new tires for my bike. I removed the rims myself and brought them at the shop the next day. So about 20 hours after I removed them, I noticed that the grease on the shafts got a little dry. I'm gonna get some grease to put on but should I wash the shafts with some WD40 first? And what kind of grease should I use?
Thanks

RE: Grease On Wheel Shafts
Wheel rotation is aided by grease on the wheel bearings. Grease on the middle of the axle won't do anything to help. That being said, I coat everything with grease when I'm in there. I'd rather have too much grease than too little. Also, whenever I have something apart, I repack the bearings. With our bearings on cbr's, you'll have to remove the dust seal to really get at the bearings. This requires a special tool to remove them without damaging them. I don't have the tool, so I just stuff some bearing grease behind the dust seals. I use heavy axle grease that i got at the auto parts store. It's the same stuff that comes in the tubes that the grease guns use. Be careful using wd40. That stuff breaks down grease. If you use it, be sure to remove it all before you add your new grease. You should never lube anything with wd40. Only use it as a cleaner, then lube with a true lubricant like axle grease for bearings or silicone for cables.
