getting to that damn air filter
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but damn near anything you do to a CBR requires the removal of much shiz-nit. It's just the way sportbikes are made. Harleys, on the other hand, have readily accesible airfilters.
I think you only have to remove the gas tank cover. im not pos so dont take my word but thats what i was told by someone in the bike shop when i asked. i believe you just remove the two bolts and your seat and you should have it. let me know because i have to replace mine also
i actually tried that today I removed the to bolts in front of the tank and even removed all of the 7 screws around the gas cap and the
F'r still did'nt want to come off.So im pretty convinced on what chainstretcher said about having to remove possibly the side plastics to get the tank plastic off

It shouldn`t be that hard, it`ll be a little different cos yours is the 6 but to get to my airbox it real easy, take of the rider seat, undo 2 bolts holding the plastic tank cover on, then undo the plastic cover bolts near the front/side of the tank cover, then undo 2 more bolts 1 either side of the tank cover and remove the plastic cover.
Then theres 8 (I think) cross head screws on the actual airbox to undo and the lid lifts off. Easy 5 mins max.

You shouldn't have to totally remove the tank itself to get to the air filter. There is actually a way to hinge it up and out of the way with out removing it. The manual suggests using a small diameter rod like 1/4" or less to keep the tank up and out of the way. Buy or download the shop manual. With it you will be able to do just about anything to your bike if you have the right tools and the confidence to try.
