front sprocket supposed to be loose?
i'm installing a 520 kit on my wife's 01 f4i. when i installed the frt sprocket and tightened the bolt/washer into the splined shaft the sprocket has lateral play. it moves back and forth on the shaft about 1mm. i can't imagine that's ok. the sprocket i have and the stock sprocket measure the same thickness. anybody run into this?

wow really? i don't really like it floating around like that so i might try to come up with a washer/spacer to fix this. at least i know it'll be ok to ride for now. i'll probably grease up those splines too to reduce wear. thank for the help fellas!

Just remember... if you "lock it down"... you better do it perfect. If not, you'll could have torsional stress on the chain (not the kind you want) and sprocket caused by a mis-alignment of the front and rear sprocket. This could lead to binding and/or poor life wear of the sprockets and chain.

LRN2GO is completely right..
the slightest angle on the sprocket and chain will cause very rapid wear... and could become a saftey hazard since your chain strength is in jepordy.
honda designed that front sprocket that way for a reason. its good you noticed it, but if everyone else's bike is designed that way, and its not a saftey recall, i woudln't modify it, or TRY and re-design the chain's drive chain by locking that floating sprocket down.
its splined.. with a locking bolt.. its not going to come off. its like that so what ever variation will compensate.

i see your point. however, the float is only about 1mm which would have minimal effect on chain angle. i'm more worried about it causing a chatter, or vibration but i'll probably end up leaving it the way it is and just lubing the splines to reduce any excess wear. thanks for all your input!
