Default Does anyone else's chain make a loud ticking noise when...

Passing other cars, riding alongside barriers, under underpasses and in tunnels?

I have a 2013 1000rr that I bought new and the chain seems to be noisier compared to my last 2012 1000rr - yes, it's adjusted properly and lubed well. If I dip down and put my head closer to the chain area while riding, I hear the chain noise and its pretty noisy. It's pretty bad when passing a car and riding next to a wall or barrier. Has this happened with anyone else?

I think the normal chain rotation noise is definitely enhanced by being acoustically(sp?) reflected back to you by what your passing. If it's adjusted properly and lubed I wouldn't worry at all. Is it the OEM or?

Yep OEM chain. Now it has me thinking if its something else ticking even in the engine possibly. Although when I dip my head down by chain I hear it comig from there

ya man, chains are noisy. really noisy. next time you're in a car and you see another bike, roll down your window and ride beside it for a while. so long as it isn't a super loud exhaust, i'll bet you hear a lot of chain.

just keep the thing adjusted and lubed properly. if something is wrong, you'll see signs. check the chain guide, check the chain slack in a few places (rotate the tire when you're checking), and make sure it's clean, and that the teeth look good on the sprockets too

thanks Conrice!

I put the bike on the stand and recorded a clip. I hear it after 23 seconds...feedback? I'm telling you, it sounds SO bad while riding though

oh ya man, you're fine. and if it's on the rear stand like that - there's no weight on the rear wheel. so, you're always going to get a little bit more clanking and what not as the wheel spins and everything. i didn't hear anything out of the norm.

I didn't hear anything out of the ordinary. I liked the wagon wheel effect on the wheel. If you looked at the center of the wheel it looked like it wasn't even turning. I see it a lot in western movies and wagon wheels.

Anyway, I sometimes hang off my bike when I'm rounding a bend into my subdivision and I'm stuck behind a SLOW car, just for kicks. I can hear my chain pretty well during that time and it clicks and clacks like yours. I keep it well lubed and adjusted.

I really do appreciate the feedback. I guess the reason it's bothering me that much is because my 2012 1000rr (essentially the same bike as my 2013 - it was stolen ) didn't make that noise, and if it did, it wasn't loud enough for me to notice. Now I'm just constantly reminded every time I pass a car on the right and the chain is so loud or if I'm riding next to a highway divider or barrier.

Add some lube? All chains make noise, but this one might be more then normal. Things do go bad new every now and then, and if you've never noticed it before its worth checking into.
