Default dead bike...again. w/new battery. NEED HELP

Ok so a few weeks ago my bike wouldnt start and the battery wouldn't stay charged. So, I replaced the battery and everything was fine. I rode it home last week for spring break. didn't touch it all week until yesterday to ride it back down to school (about an 1:20min ride).

Once again, today I go out to ride and it's completely dead. Anybody know what else could be the problem or what I should replace next? I would greatly appreciate your opinions.

Thanks

maybe the charging system..alternator?

A voltmeter will be able to help you. You can pick one up at walmart for like 18 bucks. Very useful and every garage should have one.

Exactly. You either have a dead regulator/rectifier or stator. Find a manual (online or paper) and check out the charging system. If either is bad it's probably a good idea to change both. When my stator fried I just changed the stator ... then changed it again when the regulator fried it again.

yea i was thinking alternator or the regulator/rectifier. i heard the regulators tend to go bad on bikes.

I talked to a guy at the local motorcycle shop down here and he thinks that it would be the reg. but it is also $150 new from them. hopefully i can find a cheaper one somewhere.

anybody got a used one?

thanks for the help

The reg is a common problem, especially on the F3's, so my money is on that, went through the same thing with mine.
I have read on here that you can replace the reg with one from a GSX Suzuki (do a search). I replaced mine with a non OEM heavy duty reg, which worked out about the same price as the Honda genuine one. There is a slight mod to fit them (its a bigger unit) so you have to drill another hole to attach it.
