cracked engine case, a problem or it depends
ok so, the tech says the engine case is cracked. he says it will leak oil. i asked if its any were near a bearing or load area. you know if it will cause a problem with engine internals. he says no.
ok no problem, to me any way. i can fix it i can weld the alum back, how ever i've yet to see the crack myself.
but knowing the loads/heat/vibration are bad mix with alum what are the chances that it will contune to get worse (by spreading ect..)
what are your thoughts, after fixing it, asuming i can. just ride it till she blows, ride and keep an eye on it. or start looking for a replacement longblock, and just replace it

If all you have to worry about is a drop of oil here and there then clean it up and JBWeld. But you gotta know where that crack is and you need to find out if the engine is a stressed member of the frame on your bike. If it is then I wouldn't even **** around trying to repair it. Just find a new bottom end and start over.
roger that. i should be puting the stator and flywheel on later this week, i will see it then. i will post up some pics to show what it looks like and i will go form there
my bike had a crack right under the stator cover. it was jb welded before. then i had to replace my stator and the jb weld fell off. So i had my dad help me re jb weld it. (hes a pro welder) anyway after die grinding, 2 cans of starting fluid and using a propane tourch to make sure we got all the oil off of it, it still leaked. so we ended up making a rubber plug for it and have had no problems since. so if you decide to go with jb weld make sure you get every last little bit of oil residue off the alumin first. one of these days i'll have my old man alum weld it..
i was thinking of cuting a V into it then rebuilding area with alum, the biggest worry i had was it was/is going to spread liek a alum sheat tear like on aircraft. you know from vibration, also it interfering with the internals in any way.
but jbweld may be a fast cheaper solution worth trying first as i will have to rent the welding stuff. my mig cant do it, i need a tig.
also do any of you thing a crash cage is a wise idea to protect it in the event of another wreck? i am thinging yes.

The crack may spread depending on the area where it is located, you may be able to jbweld it for the riding season but definately check into another block or at a minimum welding it properly during your next off season.
