Default Coolant in Carbs?

Hey Guys,
I just pulled the carbs off a bike I just bought to clean them, and there appeared to be coolant residue in them (green gunk). There's a coolant hose going from the water pump into the carbs, then back out to a valve and then into the head. Is it possible the carbs are leaking coolant into the carbs. It doesn't run very well (I put it back together), and it has no power. Can I just bypass the carbs to see if that's the problem (it should run better if it were leaking coolant into the floats and the carbs were bypassed). Anyone ever had that problem?
Jeff
