Default clutch disks

worst come to worst I need my bike running to get a better job someone has setup for me. The bike has 8 disks and until I can afford to take it to a shop I need to take a disk and plate out because the lever will not reach the lifter piece. besides doing what your not supposed to do, as long as I tighten the plate bolts is there any real danger? Running off of 7 disks and plates instead of 8?

I wouldn't. I'm not sure how much more you'll be able to tighten those bolts down without stripping them. On my 954 and 600rr - those spring bolts are essentially bottomed out and then putting them at 9lbs/ft is basically snugging them up...

And with a plate and disc missing, the pressure plate will be closer, meaning you'll actually have less pressure on the pressure plate, and you'll get clutch slippage.

Even if you were able to tighten those springs up more (without them bottoming out and without stripping them), the problem is that it would be harder to pull the clutch because the springs will be tighter..., you're clutch lever is pulling on the springs, nothing else. Tightening them up will make it incredibly hard to pull the clutch lever (even though there is a disc and plate missing).

I don't understand what your problem is though. What lever is not reaching the lifter?

And you have a 929 or a 954? Then that's easy man. Your clutch basket isn't in all the way. The problem is you didn't account for the "scissor gear". Basically, when looking behind the timing rotor on the crank, there is a hole on the crank shaft scissor gear that allows you to take a screwdriver and line up those scissor gears so you can push the basket in the entire way.

Here's a link.

It'd be VERY bad news if you rode with it like that. Taking a disc and a plate out would have not helped you at all. You would have just pulled the entire basket towards the clutch cover.

I had a similar problem on my 600. You need to make sure the drive gears fully mesh. Here was how mine looked:

Takes a bit of fiddling to get it back in. I used bent pliers and leveraged against the case to get the teeth to mesh.
