Default cluster problems

i have a 97 cbr 900rr the only thing that works on the cluster is the rpm gauge and the lights that show nuetral, turn signals etc. the heat gauge swings back and fourth usually sticking way past the overheat mark occasionally sitting in the position in should be in. The speedometer will SOMETIMES work up to 35 and then swing back and fourth most of the time not working at all. should i look into getting a new cluster or might there be another way to go about this. keep in mind i have a limited amount of tools and wiring ability..

any advice helps! thanks!

Sounds like poor connections on the back of the cluster. I'm not specifically familiar with the 900, but usually there are a couple of connectors that plug into the back of the unit. Check them, unplug and replug them in.

didn't work... after taking a closer look it looks like the main stem everything is connected to has a huge gash in it. is that going to be complicated to fix or replace?

If you're referring to the wiring harness, I'd be more inclined to replace the harness than try to repair several broken wires (depending on how many). It also depends on your skills as well and how comfortable you are at doing these tasks.
