Does anyone know where a good How-To on cleaning carbs is? Either it be just cleaning the idle jet, checking valves, or completely taking them off and apart. I am having some sort of problem along these lines and need to know how to troubleshoot/fix it. Thanks.

i was having major carb troubles on my katana, so i used some carb cleaner fuel additive and it seems to be working great, and it gets better every time i ride it. i'd advise trying that before you tear everything down.

 

Fuel additive may clean out all the passages it flows through, like the idle jet, choke circuit, and pilot screw. Things that affect starting, idle, and off idle. It won't clean the diaphram/piston or piston wall. Or the air bleeds that affect the rising of the piston and needle jet. The piston and needle control acceleration and all the mid-range, and a sticky piston probably accounts for 90 percent of carb-related problems. The only way to clean the piston is to take off the vacuum chamber cover.

 

i have a clymes manual and it shows good detail, however i dont think i want to try and resync the carbs after i take them off. plus, the screw on the air filter box are real tight and almost stripped. i may end up leaving this one to the shop, or atleast someone who has done this before. i have added lucas fuel additive, it is extremely thick and was recommended over sea foam by the guy at the shop. it seemed to fire up real nice at first and then it died. i am currently trying to get the additive burned up so the bike will fire up and idle with choke or not just to get them cleaned. i have been trying for about an hour off and on to get it to crank over and it just wont go. i occasionally hear it start and then just stop. i really dont want to take it to the shop since that always cost $$$.
