Choke and temp problem
I ride an 05 f4i and am having a problem that I really don't know how to work on. When I start the bike, the auto-choke starts normally. The problem is it the RPMS continue to rise to about 5k, and it lasts for a few minutes rather than until it its 97 degrees or so. The RPMs do go back down to 1.3k or so while idling. This comes to my second problem. The temperature gauge is either wrong, or my bike is really hot.
When its warming up it used to start reading a temp at 97 degrees and gradually increase. Now it starts reading at over 120 and jumps up to 150 then to 170 then 220+ even though it shouldnt be that hot. The fan used to kick on at 224 degrees(which would require me to sit idling on a really hot day). But now, when I was on the freeway going 80 on a cool day the temp read 260 and the fan didnt kick on until around 260.
The weird thing is when the bike was 220+ I could feel the heat from the engine, but now even when it says 250+ it doesn't feel hot. It started randomly one day, and not gradually. This leads me to believe it maybe a computer problem and not something physical/mechanical.
Any help is appreciated, I was thinking about replacing the coolant, I read somewhere the way the choke works with the coolant could be a problem. Thanks for your time!

first thing is to check your coolant level. if it's low, the wax unit wont pull down your idle and the bike will overheat. check your cap as well. that can cause a pressure loss and blow coolant out of the radiator.

Nice call 74demon, right on the money. People don't realize how little coolant is really in our bikes. It has to be checked and kept full, otherwise it can't do it's job.
