Default CBR full check up at 21k miles

My cbr600rr is a first bike, at 21k miles and I'm taking it to get a valve adjustment. Since they will be accessing the air box and spark plugs, I'm also replacing that as well.

I will flush out my brake system myself, but does anyone know what else needs to be checked/replaced? I heard ignition sync... not sure what that is ... ?

I doubt your valves will need adjusted. I asked the service manager at my local dealer about a valve check on my 954 and he said unless you hear one knocking its not worth the $350-$450 labor cost to check them. They charge to take your bike apart, then check the valves, then put your bike back together. I also asked how much they sell the valve shims for and he said we dont have valve shims. You can guess my next question. I said how do you do valve adjustments if you dont have shims on hand since you never know which ones you will need and he just smiled and tried to change the subject. If you still want to have them check your valves I would mark the valve cover in a way to tell if they actually did the work.

All the other work you can do yourself with the help of a service manual. Buy spark plugs from your local auto parts store. They will get you the same plugs for half the price. Coolant flush would be a good idea.

I know it's your first bike so let me just tell you...the valves on a motorcycle are mechanically actuated. So they have to be mechanically adjusted. This is so as the valve seat wears the clearance to the cam lobe is maintained. If you have a bike with limited/no clearance compression on start up ( and the entire time the bike is running) will suffer. If your bike starts very fast and runs great I'd say don't worry about it. Honda valve trains are made so good nowadays. I have a '01 929RR with 35k mi and have never had the cams out of the bike. But getting clearances checked isn't as big a service $$, as removing cams to adjust a valve or two. Your bike will let you know when it's struggling. If you need to crank that starter to build compression take it in.
