I typically spray wd40 in first to clean the cable out of any dirt that has accumulated, then I go and spray the chain lube I've got into the cable. works well enough for me.

I use superlube or anything with Teflon in it. it dries dry (does that make sence?) and does not collect any grime. I have been using it on Bicycle brake cable and the chain for years as well as my speedo cable on the motorcycle. I ride an old '93 1000f, Hydrolic clutch so not much experience there though.

If the chain lube gets too gooey, WD40 should be able to flush it out. WD40 cuts grease better than anything.

How old are the existing cables ? Do you keep the bike outdoors ? Exposed to any rain / condensation / overnight temperature change / rust getting in those cables ?

I replaced mine recently, were over 10 years old... one was fine but stretched to the max. The other one actually snapped as I removed it (from rusting right in the middle and years of rubbing back and forth had weakened it right in the middle also)

You should consider replacing your cables if they're old. You don't want to be in an accident caused by a cable snapping.
