burning valve cover gasket
i have a 2000 cbr 600f4 and was racing my brother. heard a loud rapping noise and the engine shut down.bike fired right back up and rode it home.oil was flowing from a small drain hole under cylinder 1 exhaust pipe.i removed valve cover and found that no oil is getting to cam lobe above #1 cylinder, causing it to heat up and melt the gasket and causing it to leak. i replaced cct and valve cover gasket and shortly after firing bike up it started to leak again and i can tell it is still heating up from not enough oil at top of #1 cylinder only and can hear the ticking getting louder. what is my problem. so i can get riding again. Lack of oil. head gasket? i just dont know were to begin again. any ideas email kevin kgoulart2003@comcast.net
As far as I know, there shouldnt be a drain hole under your exhaust.
Is the hole threaded?
it sounds like you cracked your head and the oil passage is now leaking instead of building enough pressure to get to your cam.
Either way, your head is shot. That amount of heat to melt a gasket that is already designed to withstand a considerable amount of heat can only mean your cam to your head surface is shot. The tollerance is so tight on the cam to head, that without oil it will basically melt the aluminum on your head and creat an egg shaped surface. the ticking your hearing is more than likely your cam walking up and down on the cylinder head. There is no way to repair this type of damage. Well, at least cost efficient anyway.
whatever happened, at the very least, your head will need to be replaced. I would pull the head and inspect everything. Hopefully its just the head and not something more serious.
The good news is that cylinder head is a fairly available. you should be able to pick up a good used one for 200 or so. I'd start hunting on Ebay.

the holes i am refering to are there to allow moisture to drain from the spark plug holes.but i agree. i probably do have head damage. not a lower end problem. bike runs fine. just got the ticking in the top end from lack of oil to the cam lobe.
That doesnt make much sense. I'm not a mechanic by trade, but. There shold NEVER be any moisture IN the combustion chamber, right? If there are any "holes" in it wouldnt the little explosions created in there just vent through the hole instead of pushing the piston down. And how would any moisture get into the spark plug holes? Unless you took the plugs out and pissed in the hole. Plus if there were holes in there then our motors wouldnt hydrolock, the extra fluid would just drain outta those holes, wouldnt it?
i am not talking about holes in the combustion chamber. i am talking about the holes that allow moisture to escape the hole that you slide the ignition coils into. derrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. im not an idiot and i am a mechanic by trade. just not a bike mechanic
