black box starting on fire
theres a black box right beside tge battery bolted to the outside of the sub frame a small circle has appeared.that smoke comes out of. ill put pictures up in a second ! its a.97 900rr
You regulator/rectifier is fried. This controls the hi-lo voltages of the electrical system and charging of the battery.
Honda used a poorly engineered solution for about a decade on their bikes.
You have several choices...
There is a replacement OEM, with fins, to better dissipate heat.
Electrosport and Rick's make a high quality replacement
A lot of folks roll with a Suzuki 750cc (or greater) as a replacement.
Given the advanced state of your damage to the r/r,
I would carefully inspect the entire harness.
Look for bubbled/melted wiring and heat-related damage to the connectors.
Here's a few links, if you want further info on the electrical/charging system...

HONDA CBR900RR Fireblade, 96-97 - Buy the BEST Stator Regulator/Rectifier CDI - ElectroSport
voltage regulator in Electrical Components | eBay
R/R's are pretty generic, if you stick to one from 2000>, you should be fine.
Match engine displacement (or greater) to be assure you have the 'beef', vs the stator's output.
Rule of thumb, the bigger the displacement, the more robust the electrical system.
Just double check the connector because you may have to adapt it to your harness.
The OEM is almost 2x the price of the Electrosport (or Rick's).
I, personally, went with the Electrosport and the warrenty.
Good luck, Ern

Need to do as the hatter suggests and inspect everything. A reg / rec failure can cause a cyclic cascade system failure. Ex: r/r fails, damaging the harness. Harness damage causes inconsistent voltage / resistance, damaging the battery or stator. That damage turns around and damages the r/r you just replaced.
Or the r/r burning could be a symptom of a bad stator. Do the diags and make sure that's not the only thing wrong
