I went to put my starter together today (I powder coated the case black to match the motor) and it's shorting out. I pulled it back apart and with the armature out, there is no short. Put the armature back in, I get about 1ohm of resistance (positive terminal to starter case). Pulled the armature back out and tested the resistance across the armature pads (where the brushes run) and I get anywhere from 1-4 ohms resistance.

Ideas?

 

never mind... turns out my bench top power supply doesn't have enough amps to turn these little starters. Grabbed a car battery and the motor zipped to life.

 

i was going to say, those readings sound about right. I'll bet that starter looks really good.

 

Still need to get the cylinder head coated but I'm happy with the results thus far. Since I'm going naked, I didn't want anything (other than the stainless bolts) to "show".
