Anyone familiar with a Throttle Stop????
I need some help/opinions about installing a throttle stop on a 2005 cbr1000rr?
A long story short, I am getting ready to buy the cbr mentioned above and I am a new rider that have taken the MSF course over a Rider's Edge in Annapolis, MD. I was getting ready to get a 600rr until I heard about this throttle stop option to put on my first bike. From what I was told and some research is that the throttle stop is designed to keep a bike under a certain rpm and can be adjusted. So I was thinking that a throttle stop would be perfect for how I was going to start learning on a 2005 cbr1000rr without having to purchase a "faster" bike in the future. There is a lot more reasons why I am probably going to buy this bike. I will explain any question's about my reasoning, but I would really like some advice and maybe more clarification on how a throttle stop would work for a beginner rider if anyone knows any info about this

Ive never heard of a throttle stop, but that doesnt mean it doesnt exist. What should be stopping you from going too fast or being stupid is the throttle stop in your brain. Both of those bikes will get you in a wheelchair or killed if there is a loose connection between good decisions and your right hand.
Its not the rpms that get you in trouble. In fact, being able to get out of harms way quickly is a must and excercised quite often with all the clueless drivers out there. I would have thought the msf class would have taught you that.

yeah I did actually learn that in the MSF course and honestly I have been thinking that I probably don't need it because of what you mentioned about "the throttle stop is in your brain"........but as far as getting a 999cc bike for my first is because, honestly I would like to keep up with my buddy in the straights without having to purchase a bigger bike later to do that(more $$$ to spend), but this is after about a month or so of riding alone on a 2.5 mile round about that is located in my neighborhood and does not involve any traffic, so I believe that would be great practice before going out on the "real" streets/highways.............
But my biggest concern at this point is learning to get a smooth take-off going from 0-20mph or so....That's what I really want to "perfect" before stepping out on the "real" streets/highways........

What you are actually talking about is a rev-limiter. (they are actually to keep you from over-reving the bike). If they are tune-able downward, it would do what you are asking. Unfortunately, I don't know enough to tell you if they are tune-able in this manner. Regardless, if you tuned it enough to overcome irresponsible behaviour, you wouldn't have enough power to pull out of the driveway.
I actually agree with Demon on this one. While it can be difficult to keep the 'choke-chain' on, it's the only realistic option. If you don't think you can exercise self-restraint on the street, I would personally council AGAINST getting a motorcycle in the first place. You're the only one who can really make that call, but I would feel sad to read about it in the papers/forums, if you go out and turn up dead/vegged or paraplegic.

I appreciate the honesty and I do believe that I will respect the bike enough that would prevent me from exercising irresponsible behavior while riding alone or with others...so don't worry about reading bad things happening to me.

Over confidence kills but so does a lack of confidence. I would give some serious thought to getting a cheap small bore throw away bike to get some riding under your belt before taking on either the 600 or 1000. The 600 is also a very powerful bike. You need to develop some defensive skills to survive out there. Over caution can get you in a lot of trouble. You have to make decisive moves in a fraction of a second from time to time. Keep us posted and ride safe.
A throttle stop is a simple device that mounts on or near the carbs to limit the travel of the throttle. Its basis comes from drag racing, brackets usually, which allows you tune your car to run a preset 1/4 mile time and they are almost standard equipment there. Seems like it would fine for what you have in mind. Learning on a bigger bike is not about restraint or discipline, its about doing things you did not mean to do that will get you in trouble and 'slipping ' on your throttle control is probably in the top 2 worst offenders.
So I'd say its a great idea, just be sure to have it installed by someone who knows what their doing or it may create a bigger safety issue on its own.

Thanks Zaq, the guy that recommended it to me actually build bikes and use to drag race with his uncle. He said he knows how to install it and it can also be adjustable. Also he was highly recommended to me by a close friend of mine that knows him...
