Default adjusting bolt: In an jam!

(for a '04 600rr)

in a bit of a jam.

my first time replacing my chain and sprocket. honda manual said to completely loosen the adjusting bolt in order to remove the tire, thought i did but it just made the chain super tight. (i turned the adjusting bolt both ways many times trying to figure our how to do it) so, i used the chain breaker to remove the chain.

now, i've replaced the spocket and trying to put the new chain on but the chain is too short. so i'm trying to figure out how the adjusting bolts work, i thought they determine the distance between the 2 wheels? either way i turn it only allows a few turns and doesn't seem to make any difference. anybody know what i'm doing wrong? i have the axle nut loose and tried to push the rear tire in, but doesn't budge.

also, how important is it for the bolts to be on w/ correct torque? can i just tighten as hard as i can?

i've been reading up on chain adjustment but it'd be very appreciated if someone knew what i was doing wrong, or what i'm not understanding.

YouTube - ‪Chain and Sprocket Replacement‬‏

That should help. The chain should be the correct length if you bought the correct kit. The the bolts are all tight, not gorilla hands but pretty tight.

thanks backyard; i've actally seen that vid, been watching a lot of vids and reading many articles, but i couldn't figure out what i was doing wrong.

@trys: thanks for the tip, i googled pb blaster and learned something new, will have to pick up some of that liquid magic soon!

i got everything back together w/ the help of a friend of mine. turns out i just needed some elbow grease to get the left adjustment bolt turning. still got to make sure the alignment is correct, i've been reading about the 'string method" so I guess i'll try and get aroud to do that soon.

i hand tightened everything with just a guesstimate but tightened the axle bolt as tight as i could. i will check them in a few days and will borrow a friends torque wrench next week to do it right.

cool glad you got it figured it. I had been disapointed by wd40 and needed something that would spray into my bike cables easier and found the pb blaster.. works great for rusty or dirty stuff. as a side note i started using chain wax on my cables with good results..
