Accident: Safe to reuse helmet after crash?
Hi everyone,
I'm kind of a lurker here, but I got a question.
About 2 weeks ago, I was involved in a little accident. Laid the bike down at 35-40 mph, and slid on the ground. This is the first time I've laid down a bike.
The bike's a little scraped up (2002 F4i), thank God for the frame sliders. (Just needs some new fairings)
I'm fine. My gear saved my ***. The worst road rash I got was on my palm where the asphalt ate through my AlpineStars SMX Gloves.
The Yoshimura S1 leather jacket did it's job. I'm a little bruised but good to go.
My helmet (Shoei RF-1000 "Caster") did get a little roadrash on one side, but I don't think my head hit the pavement in an "impact" sort of way.
Do I really NEED to buy another $500+ helmet now? Or can I keep riding with the Shoei until I can save up some extra cash to get a new one?
Of course I would never ride WITHOUT a helmet. You'd have to be a moron to ride without one. In fact, I see some guys at my college riding in shorts and T-Shirts and I shudder at the fact of them crashing without gear. This was proof enough for me that you NEED gear when you ride.
Thanks guys!

BUY A NEW HELMET
BUY A NEW HELMET
Listen, your best bet, (my helmet has road rash) is to take it to a shop where they can X-RAY the helmet and determine whether the internals were weakened, or broken in your crash, whether you think there was an impact or not, there was, I really f--ked my bike up doin 30 in a corner but the bike is as beautiful as ever after some work, BUT, my helmet is screwed up, my jacket is fine, my gloves, not a scratch. But my helmet is screwed up, all rashed out, TAKE IT TO GET IT X-RAYED, BUT GET A NEW ONE OTHERWISE.
and you don't need a 500 dollar helmet, the 'Scorpion' brand of helmets are usually Snell tested as well as DOT approved, same quality as Arai and Shoei if not better, personally I really want to get a simpson, if I had that kind of cash to throw up for one, but on a budget, go with scorpion, same protection, you won't be bargaining on your brains, but it'll be cheaper.
