Default 96 900rr engine rebuild

hello, I have my 1996 Honda cbr 900rr that I finally getting ready to rebuild. however, I have heard that the 96 900rr engine is plated and can not be rebuilt?, or that it is going to be expensive to do it? so as far as machining the cylinders, can a regular machine shop do it or do I need to take it to a motorcycle shop that can machine them at a high price per hole?

You could always get sleeves for it which would be cheaper... As far as a shop, the workers are going to know whether they can do the work for you. You need to call and see. There are many automotive places by me that hear the word "motorcycle" and quickly defer... But then there are some machine shops that do everything...

i called a couple of machine shops and the price of re-sleeving will be about 400-600 dollars. then, new pistons and everything else will be pushing 2k. so I think I will be taking the engine out and inspecting how the current sleeves look, and if I can re-use them I will. or get a used engine for around 900$.
