Default 929 countershaft destroyed

JUST TO CLARIFY IT IS THE TEETH ONLY THAT ARE DESTROYED ON THE COUNTERSHAFT. SORRY FOR THE MISLEADING TITLE

Hello, I have not been on this site for a while but I spent the whole time riding.

My 2001 929 has some issues now that is is at 70,000km.

The spline gears between the countershaft and countershaft sprocket are destroyed. This leads me to believe that a rebuild is in order.

Do you think:

it is worth rebuilding this engine with better pistons and such or...

is it going to be cheaper/faster/better with a swap?

Any information is appreciated. Thank you.

Also: im looking to spend 1-$3000 on this and it has been running 10.7 @ 132 so I want more out of it. I dont think I can get a turbo on it for that price though.

Cheapest and easiest way is swap it with another motor. You will spend a ton of money and time building it with little gain, not to mention you better be VERY familiar with engine building to make it even run.

You could always put a 954 motor in it, but you need a lot of other parts to go with it.

If you weren't in Canada, I'd offer you my spare motor from my old erion.

If your rebuild is done correctly, you'll have as much money into the case alone as you would have into the entire spare motor.

How torn up is the tranny (I assume you've taken the motor apart)? Did you drag trash through the motor by letting the motor run, or did it shut down immediately? A picture is worth 1000 words.

And you are right, a good turbo setup will cost more than that for sure. Plus, it doesnt solve the issue of your trashed motor. Bacdoc has had a lot of success with nitrous. Most of his writeups are in the 954 section, but a lot of it would probably translate to a 929 relatively easy.

Sorry, let me clarify something:

The motor runs fine, its good. Valves were checked last year etc. It is specifically the spline gears that provide the interface between the countershaft and the ****ershaft sproket.

So the teeth on the shaft are trashed and the teeth on the inside of the countershaft sprocket.

Oh, on the outside of the motor only.

Okay, I thought you meant the dogs and cogs on the countershaft inside the motor.

I'd pull the motor out and replace your countrrshaft. It will require you to split the case though, so its up you as far as how intense you redo it...
