Default 89' 600f will not start....

Hi guys, I just picked up a non functioning 89 Hurc. (my first bike!) The engine doesnt turn over when you push the stater, the lights just dime. No clicks from the solenoid. I touched the started cable to the + battery terminal (by-passing the starter) and the engine turns over (barely). So I obviously need to charge the battery (its pretty new). But I tested the solenoid with as multitester and its failed (no continunity) Before I cough over the 70 bones my dealer wants for the solenoid, what would cause it to fail, and what should I check before installing a new one?

Thanks for any and all advice!

failing is probable age related,if you can mount it,find a starter relay off an older chrysler product or use a ford solenoid.
