If your doing an oil change its ok to put a hole thru it. And there is absolutely no way in HELL you will be a hole thru the oil cooler with a screwdriver

My guess is that he intends on replacing the filter so it's no big deal if there's a hole in old one. I've performed this successfullycouple times without hitting the oil cooler... it's not brain surgery. I forgot to mention that when you put on the new one filter, apply oil to the gasket.

that tool bluej reccomended does work, i have a similar design and its awesome! as for the band wrenches and such i would reccomend them, before trying to put a screwdriver through it, just be careful if thats what it comes down tonot to hit anything, such as PUTTING A HOLE IN YOUR COOLER[:'(],or knightslugger might start PMSing again,

Hey, before you do anything drastic, take the bike for a quick spin, or even just let it idle for 2 minutes. It'll warm the oil, making it easier to drain once you get the filter off, as well as loosen the rubber seal between the filter and the bike. If you've already drained the oil and you're just trying to get the filter off, pour some hot water of the filter where it connects to do the same thing, and use a dry rag to grab the filter. Should come right off.
To avoid the hassle in the future, switch to K&N...they have the socket-style connector on the front that makes it super easy to get off; just using a 14mm socket.

Mine wouldn't come off by hand so I got the socket wrench which looked like it would fit but slipped. Then I tried the adjustable wrench which also slipped. I then went to the screwdriver but didn't want to get oil on my good one so I used the cheap little one. It wasn't big enough or strong enough, ended up bending. Last resort was to hammer a 3/8" extension that was about a foot long through it and broke it free. Didn't have enough room to turn it far enough to get it loose enough to turn by hand so I mashed the end of the filter with the hammer till i could get my vise grips on it.

when u install the new filter wet your finger in new oil and coat the gasket on the filter. spin on untill it stops and then do NOT over tighten it. you don't need much more than 3/4 of a turn after the gasket has made contact. one of the biggest problems when people do oil changes is that they cannot get the filter off because the last guy/girl cranked it on like superman. also don't double gasket! make sure the old gasket comes off with the old filter.
