Because an electrical system is like a chain the problem could be related to any one of the single links in that chain - I'm not an electrical expert but here is what I've learned so far regarding this type of motorcycle electrical problem:

So the bike starts ok when cold but not hot?: The additional heat generated by the bike after it has reached operating temperature adds extra resistance to the electrical system resulting in reduced current flow - so a dirty or worn electrical connnection that functions when the bike is cold fails when the bike heats up.

Yes it could be related to a failing R/R, a corroded earth connection, worn starter bushes or it could just be something simple like a dirty or corroded starter button contact, battery connectors etc.

Personally I would look at the simple stuff first - take apart the clam that houses the starter button and give the starter contact a clean with contact cleaner - and check out the condition of your battery leads, the conditon of the earth to frame connection, the wiring that goes into the R/R - does the wiring look in good condition - is it badly corroded etc?

If this doesn't solve the problem then we need to look at other components in the electrical system.

No problem aguila - I hope it's just a simple fix - like cleaning up the starter contact.
