oh man, if you can tug the headers loose - then that's probably your sound right there. that's probably all of the problems if they're that loose.

it'll probably take an hour or two. longer if you want to boil the bowls and stuff like some do. it's not that complicated though, you'll see what i mean. it's not hard

Sorry about that,i meant the down pipe and muffler part slides on and off without any effort. The headers seem to be secure and in working order. I talked to the previous owner about if there were any internal motor work done or if the carbs were messed with also. He said they were jetted! Thats all he knows! Today i drove it,and it has kind of a sputter type acceleration when going at regular speed or take off. If i get into it,it goes fine. Think i need to clean the carbs and change the plugs/wires and get a new muffler! Thats my project for the week

A cylinder that isn't firing on tick-over will cause an imbalance in the clutch, which is why the noise goes away when you pull the clutch lever in. To determine which cylinders are not firing on tick-over, with the engine running and using insulated pliers, pull one lead off at a time from each spark plug. If pulling any of the leads off makes no difference to the tick-over, this indicates that cylinder isn't firing. If when you pull a lead off the revs drop then you know that cylinder is firing. Slow speed running is taken care of by the pilot jets in the carbs and will need to be cleaned with compressed air, not any form of wire! Try turning up the throttle screw to increase revs and if the engine smoothes out then clean all jets in the carb. Float levels may also need checking as well as checking if any of the floats have a hole in them. Keep us informed!

squirt bottles with water or an infrared gun will tell you much quicker which cyl isn't firing.

infrared gun is one of the best tools i've ever bought. if you work on anything, you should have one
