1987 cbr600 wont start
k, so i bought this bike. a 1987 cbr600 about 3 weeks ago. when i bought it and for about a week afterwards it ran great. then i decided to ride it to school. it started up just fine in the morning but after school it would not start, not even a cough. so got it back home and found a cracked fuel line, fixed that and she fired right up then rode around for about an hour that day. next day i ride to school again and yet again it dont start after school, again not even a cough. so i get it home again and i dont know where to go now. took the air filter off and tried spraying some ether into the carbs and yet again, not even a cough. Right to assume ignition probelm then?? pulled a boot and and stuck a screwdriver in and cranked the motor and got no spark. so iv been playing around with some wires and i have power going into the Spark unit but when i crank the motor there is no power leaving towards to pulse generator, this is my first bike so im not too sure how different it is then car mechanics. any help would be awesome, the weather is finally getting nice and it sucks having the bike sit in the garage.

but it it were only spark plugs i should at least be getting a spark off the screwdriver i put into the boot which i am not and so it leads me to think there is a problem before the plugs. as for the "pulse generator" i mentioned before does any1 knowif there should be pulses of current on those wires when i crank the motor? i was using just a 12volt test light and got nothing. is this "pulse generator" the motorcycle equivalent to a distributer?

I dont know that I would rely on a screw driver being able to generate a spark. How close did you hold it to the engine? You would have to hold it close enough for the arc to jump across, and motorcycle ignitions are not very strong. Plus, its possible you didnt make contact inside the boot as the connector for the spark plug is very small in diameter. Your best bet is to pull one of the plugs and check to see if it sparks.
As for the spark generator. You will probably have to get multi-meter to check it. I don't think it sends 12 volts. I believe it only sends a signal volt to the coil pack, which will be way under 12 volts and will not be enough to light up a 12 volt check light. its probably only 1 volt or less.

ok fair enough, so i bought a spark plug to test with as pulling one out would be a real pain and sure enough no spark. i held the plug right onto the engine block and still no spark and as for the pulse generator i checked it with a multimeter and turn out it was putin out about 0.2 volts. so that rules out all of those problems, i tried my plug in two boots, one from each coil pack and neither sparks so the problem has to be before the coil packs. any more ideas guys? im drawing a blank now.

Go to the Sticky for Manuals and follow the links to find the shop manual for your bike. In section 16, page 5 there are proceedures for testing the ignition components including the coils, and pulse generator. I came across a CBR600F1 manual here.
