Default 07 cbr... needs work... cheapest route?

I just bought a black 07 cbr1000rr with 2600 miles on it. Nice bike. Bought it off of a friend for 3500 bucks because it wasn't running. So me and my bike tech and friend Luke look at it. The secondary fuel injectors that kick in at higher rpms, the wires have been switched, so thats not a big deal. Cyl #4 is damaged. Apparently the owner of the bike had tightened the spark plug too tight and all the pieces went down into the cylinder and bent the valves when he went to start it. Then the bike kept dying on him because the battery was shot and he revved it up to try to keep the bike alive and KERPLUNK. Not a good sound you want to hear on a bike, or any automobile. What we think happened is that the belt skipped time and messed up the timing of everything. When the cylinder went up the valves came down and crunch. Now I'm not sure of everything I need to repair the bike. I'm debating whether or not to just drop another motor in it if it's cheaper. I believe I will need a need head, new valves, valve springs, piston... im not sure if the cyl wall is hurt or not and I think I need a new rod for the piston. Now does anyone will experience know the prices of all these parts or if they know instantly that a new motor will be cheaper to just drop in. Keep in mind that it only has 2600 miles on it so if I do go the route of getting another motor it will probably have alot more miles on it so I need someone's guidance on this subject. Thank you

holy crap. cheapest route would have been not to buy something like that.

But since it only has 2600 miles and u bought if for 3500 i would bring it to a shop or dealer and pay the bill for it. the cost would still be lower than if you had bought a new 07

well I could get a motor with 2000 miles on it for like 1400 bucks and me and my friend can drop the motor in easily. So I guess that is my route so far... any other advice from anyone else?

A used motor sounds like the way to go. If the bike is otherwise in good condition you'll end up with a bargain, and the job shouldn't be too bad.

With that said, I would pull apart the old motor before you drop any coin on another one. It might not be as bad as you think, and if it's just the top end it should be pretty easy and pretty cheap.

I doubt the timing slipped. I suspect heavy damage in one cylinder and the rest being fine.

If you pull apart the engine and anything other than the head is damaged, I'd opt for a new motor.

If its just the head, you can pick up a good used head for around 250. with all the gaskets and other minor odds and ends, you could get it running for under 350.

At this point though, Id probably just buy a used engine. The guy that had it before you doesnt sound like he knew how to take care of a bike. Who knows what else is good on it. Drop in a good used engine and your all set.

Keep in mind, most used engine are from bike that have been layed down. The good news here is, you can replace all of the damaged covers with the ones from the engine you have already. then, after everything is said and done, part out your old engine or sell it the way it is. The fuel injection system, stator, clutch, transmission.. all of these things will still bring some decent money. You can probably get 400-500 pretty easy. Plus, most engines you buy have the wiring harness and ecu. You can sell this stuff off too. You could probably get the replacement engine swapped for about 700-800 bucks out of pocket after you sell off the rest of the stuff.

Having an 07 1000RR for only 4200 bucks sounds like a winner to me.
