If he unplugged the exhaust servo or rotated the pulley that the flapper cable is attached to it has to be plugged back in, with or without the cable attached. The pulley also has to be rotated back to its 'home' position. In the case of the 08 the home position is when the notches on the pulley where the cable slips through are pointing straight back. Probably the same on the 07.
Also, someone on another forum made a servo eliminator that plugs in where the stock servo goes. It gets rid of the fault light and you can remove the servo completely. I think he sells it for around $20-$25.

Yea find out what the code is, although if the bike is starting and running fine the code is almost certainly something to do with emissions, like an O2 sensor or something of that nature. If you're really want to learn something about the condition of the bike have a buddy tag along that knows how to do a compression test ,although being such a new bike its almost a waste of time. Also you could check the condition of the oil, if its black it could be a sign the guy didn't maintain the bike very well. Anyway, if it cranks, runs good, doesn't smoke and shifts through all gears properly then you're good to go. No Worries
