Sounds like a fuel problem to me, although it could be a number of other things. Is the bike throwing any codes; does the MIL light blink prior to start-up? If not, I'd start with the Fuel Pressure Regulator which are somewhat notorious on these bikes. It's my understanding that a faulty one will leak fuel through the vaccum hose.
Here's an FPR write-up: LINK.

Did this just occur recently out of the blue, or has it been an ongoing problem? Also, I don't know what sort of maintenance or mods have been done to the bike. But start simple; it could be something as easy as bad gasoline. While you're in there look at the air filter (has it been replaced before?), is the MAP sensor hooked up, check that the vaccum lines are all still attached, check and/or replace the plugs, ect. Do you have a copy of the Service Manual?
