Default 02 F4i Nightmare... Need Help

Hey guys,

I know this post has been done before but there was never a clear answer. What Ive got is a 02 CBR600F4i. Fuel pump stopped priming and no spark.

The issue started off bad. I bought the bike of craigs list did a vin check everything looked good. The guy lived 6 hours away so I had my brother go check out the bike for me. Brother called me when we he was checking out the bike and everything looked good. Brother picked up the bike. When I got around to picking up the bike from my brother there were major issues rite off the bat. The key was snapped in the ignition. The key lock on the gas cap was drilled out and had a gaping hole to the gas tank. The bike had clearly been down on both sides but softly enuff to only damage a clip on the inner fairing. Thats all fine and good 45$ and fixed... Dad went to register the bike for me and found theres no title in the paperwork no registration nothing other then a makeshift bill of sale. After further investigation police got involved to make sure the bike wasnt hot we found over 1k$ in parking tickets and almost 900$ in back paid registration. (I did do a VIN check and it came up clean. How IDFK). DMV covered the parking tickets but the 900 fell on me for back paid reg.

That all paid title now in my name and plates are on. Ignition was run through wires in the bottom hacked together to a kill switch on the side of the headlamp fairing. Now the rear end. Looked and blinker or running lights arn't working... Key to loosen the rear seat was drilled out so no way to get the rear seat off. After 45 min and some redneck engineering we got it off to find the back end was completly rewired with telephone connectors. Spent 3 hours rewiring reconnecting crimping and getting it all fixed the rear end is good!!!. Bikes running with new ignition cherry.

Rear Tire and Rear Brakes
Spent 2 weeks waiting on an order for new brakes from local shop to find out they never ordered them. When they came in I rode the bike over to get an overhaul done. Flush brakes radiatior brakes installed new rear tire put on and balanced etc. Get there to find out my front brakes were only ones ordered. (Still waiting for Rear brakes .. )

I got home from picking up my "Brakes" and while waiting on garage door to open the bike dies. I turn it off and bike on starts fine but when going into 1st as soon as i shift the bike died. Same thing going into second... Tried High RPMS and dies... Ok wiring issue somewhere else... Look into the wiring fix a couple places and the fuel pump stopped priming... Ok pulled the fuel pump tested and its fine... Checked for spark and nothing...

Since then I have countless hours hunting with a microscope trying to find ANYTHING out of place. Ive checked every sensor relay BAS is fine. Cannot figure out what is causing the bike to not run...

This is my first bike and honestly loosing faith really quickly... Ive ridden and worked on them my entire life but the first ive owned. Can someone PLEASE help me out... ATM im currently looking into replacing my ECU

I bought the bike of craigs list
First mistake.

Brother called me when we he was checking out the bike and everything looked good.
Did he know what he was looking at? Maybe a dealership would have been a better place to have it inspected before your purchase.

ATM im currently looking into replacing my ECU
Not a high rate of failure part. Something else is not right. Check other things like kill switch, kickstand switch, headlight connections, and battery/charging system. They all can interrupt running circuits. Check connections for burned parts, very common scenario...

Good luck.

Yes as ive found out craigs list was a horrible idea. Bikes go for 1/2 to 1/4 dealership price on there and that's what tempted me... Huge lesson learned now im just trying to fix the mistake.

As far as my brother picking up the bike. We have been on bikes our entire life and did all the mechanic work ourselves with the help of my dad. I trusted his decision. The guy rode up on the bike. My brother got on it checked it out and gave me the go ahead. Turned out to be a mistake again and has cost me a chunk of money in parts.

The ECU from everything ive read has been known to go out on 01-03 F4i's. Ive read forums for hours trying to find similar issues and what I found was 7/10 times the ECU was bad. The kill switch is working fine I made sure it wasn't worn and played with it to make sure its working. Kickstand switch was 1 thing im looking into now. Glanced at it for a min and everything looks intact but will do further testing on it tonight. Headlight connections are all there nothing burnt bent or not functioning correctly.

I have not looked at the battery charging system so ill look at that too tonight. Had the battery tested and it checked out fine. I did have a burnt fuse but that was replaced in 5 min of bike having issues so I doubt that would be causing any issue.

I have a mechanic that wants me to bring the bike to him so if the battery charging system and kick stand sensor check out fine ill be hauling it to him.

It's not that the ECUs don't go out, it's that other things are more common. The ECU is a pricey guess that should only be made after all other things have been checked, rechecked, and then checked again. For those 7/10 times it was the ECU, there are hundreds of other times that problems were solved without even getting to the ECU.

Good news... Little Shout out!! Sikmoto.com or www.facebook.com/sikmoto This is the mechanic in San Luis Obispo CA that is doing the work... Amazing guy to work with and bends over backward for his customers... Im hauling the bike to him Sat for a diagnostic and have some work done...

Diagnostic, Rear Tire and balance (Im bringing my own tire and brakes), Front and rear brakes, Brake flush, radiator flush, Tension clean and oil the chain and they are tossing in a free wash and wax for $130... Another good thing is this guy has a working ECU for an F4i to test before I buy one

Sooo where it stands... Front fork seals are blown and forks need to be rebuilt... Mechanic will do em for 135$ including the seals and oil... Brake flush found that the original Brake fluid from 2002 was still in the bike... Very glad I had it flushed... Rear Brake pads had 5% life left on them at best... Front brakes fine at 25%... Rear replaced as well as new rear Pirelli Angel

Awaiting end result of diagnostic

WOW! Apologies for the bad luck friend.

I am a new rider who just happened to be cruising through this threat and I can only imagine how frustrating this situation might be for you. Lesson learned though.

Im interested in the end result. Please keep us posted man and good luck!

I've had good experience buying bikes on craigslist, but only ones I can inspect and ride personally.

You need to ask your brother WTF he was looking at. Anyway, I'm happy to hear you're on your way to getting this resolved.
